If you haven’t been to the CHI St. Alexius Devils Lake Hospital’s Gift Shop in a while, it is worth stopping by to see the changes they have recently made.

A crew of eight to ten volunteers have worked hard to spruce up, modernize and re-imagine the hospital’s Gift Shop. First they gave the whole place a new and fresh paint job after removing the old wallpaper, new carpet squares replaced the old floor covering and a new ceiling installed. The check out counter has been moved to the south wall.

They are using numerous items of furniture - on display and for sale on consignment - to display the gift items for sale, too. They have quite a variety of greeting cards and they are all for sale for less than a dollar. They even have a cart filled with items that are also marked a dollar, from last year’s inventory, but most everything on display is new for the 2018 holiday season. They plan to change the displays and inventory with the seasons.

There are some items, however, that are not seasonal, like gifts for newborn babies. Displayed on a buffet cabinet are Rada cutlery, a very popular item, according to the new gift shop manager. Currently the Gift Shop is open 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays.

The Gift Shop’s new manager, Pam Walker, says they are hoping to be able to expand the hours and number of days they are open, if they can get a few more volunteers to help. She said that six to eight volunteers who might be willing to work one shift a month would help a great deal and allow them to be open more days each week and/or more hours each day, maybe even later in the afternoon or evening one day or so each week. But first they need the personnel to offer that. First things first.

Anyone is welcome to become a volunteer, all you have to do is call Walker at 662-2499 and leave a message for her, she will get back to you. She adds, with a broad smile, that training will be provided for everyone.
