The community recently observed Memorial Day as we as a nation remember those who served their country and gave the ultimate sacrifice.

Fourteen North Dakota National Guard who lost their lives since the War on Terror began will be remembered in a very special way on Saturday, June 2 with the 14K Fallen Soldiers Run/Walk.

This year’s event starts at 7:30 a.m. at Ruger Park with registration. There is a fee of $25 per person to participate, $15 for youths 12 years of age and under. Early registration will be June 1 from 5 - 6 p.m. at Ruger Park. The proceeds from this event will benefit ND TAPS Program. TAPS is the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors.

There is a new course this year. The race starts at Ruger Park in the main building, turns south onto 5th Ave. NE, turns east on 6th, then south on 6th Ave. proceeds under the underpass, turns on 2nd St. until you cross Highway 2 at Leading Edge (John Deere) and use the bike path to Lakewood, proceed through Lakewood to the back gate of Camp Grafton ending at the historic Camp Grafton Edwards House.

The route is marked at each kilometer by a poster bearing the name of a North Dakota National Guard member who lost their life starting in 2003 to the most recent. Transportation will be provided back to Ruger Park.
