The challenge? Finding all seven of the Horcruxes to rid the Wizarding World of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named once and for all.
Oh, and get it done in less than 50 minutes.
That is the premise of the temporary Harry Potter Escape Room at Lake Region. Escape rooms, growing in popularity worldwide, are an adventure game where players use riddles, clues, and objects to complete a task and escape the room.
Fittingly, a student from England is the genius behind the design. Harvey Barr, known to many in the community as the 7’1” center for the Royals Basketball team, has also become a familiar face to students at Sweetwater Schools where he does some reading. On the LRSC campus, Barr keeps busy maintaining a high GPA, acting as a Residence Assistant for the Dorms, and serving as co-president of the honor society, Phi Theta Kappa. Add to all this a fascination with Harry Potter and thus, the Harry Potter Escape Room. Unlike many trending escape rooms, this one does not have secret passageways or doorways leading to other rooms.
But Harvey packs the room with enough challenges related to Harry Potter to make it “great fun,” according to Evan Stack, PTK Co-Vice-President and part of the first team to try out the room. “We made it out in 41 minutes and only had to have one hint.” Nic Fassos, another member of the first team and PTK Co-Vice-President, agreed. “It was awesome. I’ve been watching Harvey put this together over the past few months and it really came together well. I’ve been to a sanctioned escape room, and this one was just as fun!”
The Escape Room opens up in conjunction with Library Week [April 8-14] Celebrations. Because the Collinson Room, where the adventure begins, is off the Paul Hoghaug Library, players can also check out all the new features of the new LRSC Learning Commons. The escape room will continue till April 22nd with sessions from mid-afternoon to late evening at a flat fee for up to four people.
