Building on their success in earning an invitation to compete in the USA Shooting Junior Air Rifle National Championships, Brandon Alexander and Jacob Vaagen have earned yet another invitation to a National Air Rifle Championship.

The North Dakota State 3Position Air Rifle Junior Olympic Championships were held in Buffalo, ND over this past weekend. After the last pellet went down range, the four-person team of Brandon, Jacob, Christopher Morstad and Hannah Vaagen have earned an automatic invitation to compete at the Civilian Marksmanship National Three-Position Air Rifle Championships which will be held at Camp Perry, Ohio from June 24-26, 2018.

The team aggregate score was 2291, and the automatic invitation is extended to teams firing scores over 2280. Each competitor in this match fires 20 shots from each of the positions of prone, standing and kneeling for a total possible score of 600. Brandon fired a 590, Jacob a 571, Chris a 565 and Hannah a 565. There were many individual highlights during this match.

One of the most significant is that Hannah is recovering from a concussion and felt very dizzy during the standing portion of her match. She took a short break at the end of her standing event to eat something, and then went back up to the line to fire the second best kneeling score fired in this match to finish with a 197 out of a possible 200. Brandon fired a perfect 200 with 18 center shots in prone to tie for the best score fired in prone, and he also fired a 195 with 14 center shots for the best score in the standing portion of the match.

The air rifle matches are fired at a target 10 meters away, and to earn a 10 from any of the 3 positions, the pellet must cut the 10 dot which is roughly the size of the period at the end of this sentence. In order to develop the level of skill necessary in order to perform this well, these young people have trained for years in the Ramsey County 4H Shooting Sports program and in the Lake Region Shooting Sports Association’s junior shooting programs.
