What more can you ask for from opening night? Well for the Devils Lake girls basketball team, Tuesday evening was a chance to get on the court against a different team, be part of competitive action and earn a hard-fought conference matchup.

It wasn't easy, but the Firebirds picked up a win in its first game of the season. The home team defeated Eastern Dakota Conference (EDC) foe Fargo North 71-69 inside the friendly confines of the Devils Lake Sports Center.

The Firebirds led by two at half and walked away with a two-point victory.
First-half buckets by Alex Palmer and Taylor Windjue helped the team lead 35-33 after the first half.

Guard Mattea Vetsch exploded for 15 points including three shots from beyond the arc in the second half to help Devils Lake win 71-69.
Vetsch led the way with 23 points. Windjue also hit double figures in points with 12 points. Chiara Olson and Alex Palmer scored eight points apiece.
Jessica Mertens scored six points while Ramsey Brown, Abby Johnson and Abby Heilman scored four points each. Jailyn Martinson rounded out the scoring with two points for Devils Lake.

Anna Astrup led Fargo North with 17 points.
Devils Lake travels to face Fargo Davies Dec. 8.
