It was a long night for the Devils Lake Firebird wrestling team as they traveled to Grand Forks Red River for a triangular duel. Only this triangular had four teams that came to wrestle. Devils Lake, GF Central, GF Red River and Wahpeton all participated in two duels, leaving each team to wrestle the third duel at a later date due to time issues.

Firebirds varsity kicked off by dueling Grand Forks Central, first, a duel that resulted in the loss of 40-21. Head coach Brendon Flynn asks his team before the duel “Who are my warriors? Who’s going to go out and wrestle?” A question he’d soon get an answer to as the duel progressed. Despite the loss, Coach Flynn knew that every wrestler went out on the mat and wrestled tough.

Some key matches included: Ethan Sprenger (106 lbs.), who earned his very first varsity win. A match that was a grit and grind match until the end. Sprenger had asserted his dominance end of the second period and all of the third to beat GFC’s Amelia Foltz (Dec 6-4).

Brant Fisk (120 lbs.) having giving up 15 pounds as a 106 pound wrestler came up with a big win. As he was battling for dominance all match in a close one he went into the third period with enough toughness to win over GFC’s Braydon Williams (Dec 6-2).
For the second duel of the night. Devils Lake wrestled Wahpeton and came up with a very impressive bounce back win 42-32. A win that Coach Flynn desperately wanted to get over with. “Just what they needed, so now they know that I don’t seem crazy with my methods.” He was extremely impressed with how the wrestlers didn’t just stop wrestling after the first duel. They came out and wrestled with great toughness that both coaches knew they were capable of. All that had participated was key to the win, even the losses. The team in both duels showed huge improvement by not giving up pins. It showed extremely critical in this win.

Parker Vilandre (160 lbs.) having dominated his first match against GFC, he came out and wrestled against Wahpeton’s Gavin LeNoue. Being ranked second in the state in their weight class, Parker Vilandre showed that he can hang with the states best. He wrestled determined and hard no matter the outcome. LeNoue defeated Vilandre (MD 16-2).
Layten Wallace (138 lbs.) earned his first win of the season by pinning Wahpeton’s Braden LeNoue late in the third period (5:37). “That was a huge turning point in the duel for us.” As Coach Flynn points out how it was nothing but dominance and reassuring the victory for the duel after Wallace’s victory.

Colby Rance, George DeMarce and James Fisk won their matches in both duels. As they establish their dominance in the conference with toughness and determination. They look to keep improving off of their wins and to build toward their respective goals for the season.
The junior varsity wasn’t going to be left out for being hungry to make huge strides of improvement as Devils Lake had 20 matches, a number of matches that could easily be classified as two duels itself. A lot of the fresh faces came out and wrestled. Having done things that were a surprise for the coaches as they opened up skills that haven’t been witnessed in matches.

Coach Flynn was nothing more than impressed by the effort that was given in both duels but he used a very famous quote that all past wrestlers he’s coached remembers. “They got to keep getting better one percent everyday.” The Firebirds next tournament is this weekend Dec. 1 - 2 in Wahpeton.
