Spirit Lake honors 3 of its heroes

The people of the Spirit Lake Nation held a very special event on Veterans Day, Saturday, Nov. 11 in the Spirit Lake Casino ballrooms.

Hundreds gathered to recognize the sacrifice of local veterans and those who currently serve the country in the nation’s military service.
The Spirit Lake Nation VFW Post 6547 color guard, Lake Region Singers drum group, Tribal Royalty dancers and Chaplain Eugene Hale began the ceremony followed by a three course meal served to everyone in attendance.

Biographies of three honored veterans, Solomon Sherman, Andrew Shaw and Pierre Culbertson, were read by family members and each was given a hand made star quilt and numerous gifts.
Then a sacred ceremony was held to gift each of the over 50 veterans present with an eagle feather, prayers and blessings.

Then the Tribal Royalty in attendance danced for them and the young drum group from Tate Topa performed for them.
All was done in honor and respect for all who have served and to say “pidamaya” - Thank you in the Dakota language.
