'We needed to prove ourselves.' Cordell Yoder
The Devils Lake Firebirds (4-1) beat the Valley City Hi-Liners (0-5) on Friday, Sept. 22 by a score of 52-12. WB Cordell Yoder led the scoring for the Firebirds with four touchdowns and 100 yards rushing while Joey Hornstein accumulated two touchdowns and an impressive 218 yards rushing.
Friday night’s win comes after a tough loss against number one ranked Bismarck St. Mary’s last week.
“We needed to prove ourselves,” Yoder said. “We knew what we could do and it was a matter of just doing it.” Yoder had four touchdowns, three rushing and one receiving, with a lot of credit to his teammates, especially the linemen. “All up front,” Yoder said. “I wasn’t getting touched until the second level; that’s huge.”
“We focused this week on mistakes we made last week that aren’t typical of our team,” Coach Jake Wateland said. “We wanted to make sure that we were taking care of our business and not worrying about who we are playing against. We just had to clean up some things and make sure our focus was there.”
DL travels to Wahpeton (3-2) on Friday, Sept. 29 to take on the Huskies for important conference matchup between the two teams.
