The issue concerning who will finance the maintenance and upkeep of the heavily traveled road will continue at Tuesday morning's County Commission meeting.

Cove Road, which runs from Hwy. 19 to Woodland Resort, was a subject of debate at the county’s meeting earlier in the month.

The issue concerning who will finance the maintenance and upkeep of the heavily traveled road will continue at Tuesday morning's meeting.

Because Cove Road is a township road, representatives from both Poplar Grove and Creel townships are again expected at the meeting to discuss whether or not the county should take over maintenance responsibility.

It was estimated at the last meeting that about $150,000 of maintenance work could go into the road. Commissioner Lucas Wakefield warned at that meeting that were the county to take over the road, it would mean that neither township would have decision-making authority over Cove Road in the future.

“If you make it a county road, (the township) doesn’t get a say anymore,” Wakefield said.

A tentative proposal was made to have the county be responsible for half of the maintenance, with Creel and Poplar Grove townships splitting the other half 25/25, a discussion which may carry over into Tuesday’s meeting.

Commissioner Ed Brown said at the July 18 meeting that Woodland Resort is willing to contribute to overlay work on Cove Road.
