Marion Schmidt, 86, of Northwood, ND and formerly of Maddock, ND passed away on Friday, July 21, 2017, at the Northwood Deaconess Health Center in Northwood, ND.

Marion Schmidt, 86, of Northwood, ND and formerly of Maddock, ND passed away on Friday, July 21, 2017, at the Northwood Deaconess Health Center in Northwood, ND. Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 26 at the North Viking Lutheran Church in Maddock with Pastor Allen Campbell officiating. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service. Music will be provided by Rachel Markestad. Marion Finley was born May 24, 1931, in Devils Lake, ND to Harold and Thelma Finley. She was raised in Oberon, ND. Marion attended two years of grade school at rural Josephine School, the remaining grade school and high school in Oberon, where she was a cheerleader and played basketball. Marion attended one and one-half years of college at Valley City State University, and then taught in rural schools for five years. Marion and Arlo Schmidt were married on September 6, 1953, at the Calvary Lutheran Church in Oberon. They raised six children: Paul, Mary, Lori, Corey, David and Jon. In 1961, the family moved to Maddock. Besides teaching school in the early 1950s, Marion was an Auction Clerk bookkeeper, EMT volunteer, Nurse’s Aide, Special Ed School volunteer, and receptionist at the Maddock Business and Technical Center. She enjoyed oil painting, knitting, sewing, reading, ceramics and playing piano. Marion was a member of the North Viking Lutheran Church, where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday school. She was a member of the Progressive Homemakers for many years and also sang in Maddock Musicals. Marion is survived by her husband of 63 years, Arlo; children, Paul (Megan) Schmidt of Washington, Mary (Gary) Peterson of Jamestown, ND, Lori Nelson of Northwood, Corey (Diana) Schmidt of Hawaii, David (Vicki) Schmidt of Tennessee and Jon (Lori) Schmidt of Colorado; 14 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; sister, Patsy Hendrickson of Devils Lake; brothers, Bill (Shirley) Finley of Alexandria, MN and Tim (Carol) Finley of Oberon. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Thelma Finley; son-in-law, Mark Nelson and daughter-in-law, Lou Schmidt. Online condolences may be left at www.thenelsonfuneralhome.com.
