Merton “Mert” Graham Dodge passed away peacefully, on July 10, 2017, after a short illness. Mert was born in Lawton, ND, to Merton Russell and Vesta Dodge, both who have preceded him in death. After high school he enrolled in the Army, in part, for the G-I Bill as he wanted a college education. He became a high school teacher and basketball coach in Munich, ND, where he met his wife of 56 years, Joanne Schuler, who survives him. Joanne also became a teacher. The couple wanted a better life and warmer weather, so they moved to Merced, Calif., in 1966. He taught at Tenaya and Hoover Middle Schools for over 30 years. Mert was an avid sports fan, golfer and enjoyed going to Palm Desert, where he and Joanne have a second home. He will be greatly missed by friends and family, including a son, Brad (Jennifer) Dodge of Los Gatos, daughter Rhonda (Darren) Brown, of Fresno. He is survived by many relatives including his younger sister, Faye Overby. His grandchildren Cooper and Connor Dodge, Danielle and Brittney Brown will miss their “Pop.” A Mass will be held in honor of Mert on Monday, July 17th at Our Lady of Mercy Church in Merced at 10 a.m. A Rosary will precede the mass at 9:30 a.m
