The new 213,000-square-foot facility can hold 525 inmates with a capacity to expand to 1,000.

MANDAN, N.D. (AP) — Morton County officials say all jail inmates have been transferred to the new combined Burleigh/Morton County Detention Center in Bismarck.

The new 213,000-square-foot facility can hold 525 inmates with a capacity to expand to 1,000. The $70 million jail was funded by a temporary half-percent sales tax approved by voters in 2014.

Authorities say the new facility will help arresting officers compete their paperwork in a timely manner while others complete the booking process.

The opening of the facility is expected to reduce the number of inmates sent to Lake Region Law Enforcement Center, perhaps to zero.
