Police advise those selling items online to be aware of common internet scams involving cashier’s checks.

An apparent internet scam involving Craigslist and a used car sale has left a local resident holding the bag, according to police.

Police say the victim was trying to sell a vehicle on Craigslist and Facebook. The alleged scammer contacted the victim and sent a cashier’s check for more than the value of the vehicle. Police say the victim was then instructed to send some of the the extra cash back via money gram.

The cashier’s check was fake, according to police. The victim will be responsible for reimbursing the bank for the value of the check and is out the $1,150 sent to the alleged scammer.
