Richard “Dick” Shafer, 87, of Billings, MT, formerly of Devils Lake, passed away on February 5, 2017, in a Billings hospital. Graveside services were held February 10 at Yellowstone National Cemetery in Laurel, MT.

Richard “Dick” Shafer, 87, of Billings, MT, formerly of Devils Lake, passed away on February 5, 2017, in a Billings hospital.  Graveside services were held February 10 at Yellowstone National Cemetery in Laurel, MT.    
 He was born May 17, 1929 in Towner, ND, to William Shafer and Finna Johnson Shafer. He attended school through the 8th grade, but was unable to finish as his help was needed on the farm. Despite not finishing school he was a very successful auto mechanic and business owner of Dick Shafer's Auto and Truck Repair in Billings, which is currently owned and operated by his son and grandson.  He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army and received an honorable discharge in 1952. On April 15, 1952, he married Helen Polich of Butte, MT. After their marriage they lived in ND for a number of years and he was employed as a mechanic at Powell Motor Co. in Devils Lake. Richard is survived by his wife Helen, his children Terry (Dee Dee) Shafer, Joliet, MT, Rhonda (Jim) Ross, Brenham, TX and Dale (Marcie) Shafer, Huntley, MT; brother Gordon (Lillian) Shafer, Detroit Lakes, MN and sister Carol (Art) Rohr, Devils Lake; six grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and a Ford station wagon full of nices and nephews.
