Sometimes a fast start can make all the difference. The Grand Forks Red River girls basketball team came out of the gate as quickly as possible Thursday evening against Devils Lake. Scoring 17 of the first 19 points, the Roughridgers started strong and never looked back.

The state's No. 3 team ran away with a 79-43 conference win over the visiting Firebirds. With the victory, the Roughriders improve to 7-0 on the season and 5-0 in the conference. Meanwhile, Devils Lake drops to 3-3 and 2-3 in the EDC.
Balanced scoring was the name of the game for both teams.

Lexi Robson led the way for Red River with 16 points, Danica Kemnitz added 15 points while Kenady Steffen had 13. Kendra Bohm also had double figures with 10 points.

Macy Schneider and Mattea Vetsch each had a team-high seven points for Devils Lake. Jess Mertens finished with six points while Taylor Windjue and Alex Palmer chipped in with five points apiece. Mattisyn Barendt added four points while Averi Ziegler and Jenna Windjue had two points each. Abby Johnson rounded out the scoring with a point.

Devils Lake struggled a bit at the line going 13-for-27 at the line.

The Firebirds will be back in action Tuesday at home against Valley City. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
