Stanley E. “Stan” Syverson, 87 of Esmond, North Dakota passed away on Sunday afternoon, December 18, 2016 at the Lakota Good Samaritan Care Center in Lakota.

Stanley E. “Stan” Syverson, 87 of Esmond, North Dakota passed away on Sunday afternoon, December 18, 2016 at the Lakota Good Samaritan Care Center in Lakota.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, December 30th at 10:30 a.m. at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake with Father Brian Bachmeier officiating.  Military Honors will be accorded by the Neathery-Simensen Post #756, Devils Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars and the North Dakota Military Funeral Honors Team.  

Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 29th at the Gilbertson Funeral Home from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. with a Rosary and Scripture Service at 6 p.m.  Visitation on Friday will be one hour prior to the funeral service.  Burial will be in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Esmond in the spring.

Stanley Edward, son of Orris and Ann (Grady) Syverson was born on April 2, 1929 at Esmond, ND.
He was reared and educated in the Esmond area, attending the Isabel Township School.  He worked on the family farm until entering the United States Army on September 30, 1952.  He proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged with the rank of Corporal on September 29, 1954.

Stan was united in marriage to Ludwena Zainhofsky on November 5, 1956 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Esmond.  They lived in Devils Lake for a time and Stan was the owner and operator of the Devils Lake Taxi Service.  In the early 1960’s the family moved to Grand Forks and he worked for Dunlevy Construction Company.
In 1968, they moved to the Syverson family farm and Stan took over the operation of the farm.  Along with the farming, Stan drove school bus for the Esmond School District for many years.  In 1974 the family moved into Esmond where they lived the rest of their lives.  After retiring from farming in the early 2000’s, Stan worked for the Julin Hagen family for several years.

Stan was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church and also enjoyed membership in the Esmond VFW and the Harvey Eagles Club.

Farming was Stan’s life and love.  His card game of choice was whist, but preferred watching his grandson play basketball.  He was a huge fan of the Rugby Panthers and Minnesota Twins.

Stan is survived by his loving family.  His wife of 60 years Ludwena (who died Christmas Day, December 25, 2016); his daughters and sons-in-law Julianne (Julie Syverson) and Dwight Bergeron and Karen (Syverson) and Bruce Pallansch all of Devils Lake;  grandchildren Shawn Keller, Minot, Valerie Hewson (fiancé Matt Carmen), Devils Lake and step grandson Aaron (Laurie) Pallansch, Devils Lake; great grandchildren Bradyn and ChayLee Hewson, Kyleigh Keller, Rylan and Charlee Pallansch; sisters Mary Syverson, Esmond and Ardella (Delton) Boyer, Fargo; sisters-in-law Eileen Leibhan, Minot, Lucille (Zainhofsky) Parsons, Auburn, WA, Janice Syverson, Valley City, Susan Syverson, Faribault, MN and Eleanor (Zainhofsky) Ehni, Fessenden; special friends Toby Hoffner, Delores Wentz and family and Julin Hagen and family; numerous nieces, nephews and their families.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son Michael in 2008; brothers Warren Syverson and Neil Syverson; brothers-in-law Anthony Zainhofsky and John Leibhan.

Casket Bearers will be Dwight Bergeron, Bruce Pallansch, Shawn Keller, Aaron Pallansch, Matt Carmen, Toby Hoffner, Bob Syverson and Bradley Bergeron.  Reading Scripture will be Dwight and Penny Leier. Music will be provided by Tom Burckhard, Sherry Kurtz and JoDee Lagein.
