Debra K. Follman has been named  North Dakota Association of Elementary School Principals its National Distinguished Principal.
Follman is elementary principal for Sweetwater Elementary in Devils Lake.
The award was made at a banquet at a joint North-South Dakota conference in Aberdeen, S.D.
Follman will be among 50 winners nationwide, all of whom will be going to Washington, D.C. in the fall for a national NDP banquet.
Uner Follman’s guidance, Sweetwater has made significant academic growth in the past six years, as indicated in a North Dakota state assessment.
A school-based team approach was established to implement strategies with a goal of increased achievement.
Because of those strides, Sweetwater has won two national awards in the past two years.
Follman also developed a standards-based K-12 district curriculum and assessment development process as one of her professional goals.
She has also led or served on numerous curriculum teams in the district and on the state level.
Most recently was her leadership of the standards-based report card and the K-12 math curriculum.
“Working with educators to create a means of increasing achievement of all students and staff is a rewarding challenge for me,” Follman adds.
“I think I’ve been persistent in creating a community of learners in our school where nurturing and caring in a safe learning environment is of utmost importance.”
Follman said it was a great honor to be recognized but said it would not have been possible without several other factors.
“I’ve got a great group of teachers and kids around me, the students and families have all been great, and the school district and school board are all tremendous,” Follman added.
“We follow a shared belief that we can all make a difference.’
This is all promoted through a strong parental involvement and a shared respect as we all work together, she stated.
