E-5 Heather Nicholson was sworn in Feb. 27, 2011 in by Gen. David Petraeus in a small group.
Nicholson is the daughter of Carmen McLaughlin, sister to Beth and Ashley Nicholson, and niece of Stan and Katrina McLaughlin.
Nicholson was raised in Devils Lake, and is a 2007 graduate of Devils Lake High School. She joined the U.S. Navy in March 2008.
She is currently stationed in Kabul, Afghanistan, a communications tech and has proudly re-enlisted this year.
Carmen McLaughlin said her daughter thought General Petraeus was a nice guy.
"She said he was very funny and tried to get everyone to relax, but every now and then everyone would stand at attention," said McLaughlin. "She thought he was very nice."
McLaughlin said her daughter will be coming home for a few weeks in the summer and then sent to overseas to South Korea.
"We are all very proud of her and miss dearly," she said.
