Janice A. Brown, of Grand Forks formerly of Devils Lake, ND, passed away on Monday, July 17, 2023, at her daughter’s home in the loving care of family and Hospice of the Red River Valley. She was 83 years of age.

Janice Arlene was born on Sept. 12, 1939, in Devils Lake to Curtis and Hazel (Hagen) Bremseth. She was raised in Devils Lake, except for one year when the family lived in Bottineau, ND. Janice graduated from Devils Lake Central High School in May 1957.

Jan married Alex Dettling in November 1957 and they had 3 children – Mike, Rod, and Darcy. They were later divorced. Jan continued living in Devils Lake, working for J.C. Penney’s, and raising her children.

Jan married Bill Brown on June 16, 1976, and gained 5 step-children – Billy, Sandy, Shelley, Lisa, and Lynne.

Jan had a childcare center in her home for a number of years and later worked for Memorial Child Care in Devils Lake, retiring in July 1999.

Jan was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Devils Lake and later a member of Sharon Lutheran Church in Grand Forks after Bill’s death and her move to Grand Forks.

She enjoyed sewing, reading, crossword puzzles, word find, crochet, knitting, country music and hymns. Also, early morning coffee out with friends, chocolate, and a cup of hot tea before bed.

Jan is survived by her two sons Mike (Kay) Dettling and Rod Dettling all of Cheyenne, Wyoming, and her daughter Darcy (Dennis) Klein of Grand Forks; four precious grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Also surviving are four stepchildren Sandy (John) Eichhorn, Wahpeton, ND, Shelley (Ron) Schneider, Lisa (Scott) Sigette all of Devils Lake and Lynne (Jeff) DeStefano of Tucson, Arizona; several step grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Bill on Feb. 7, 2012, her parents, her sister Marlys (Barry) Ingerson and stepson Billy.

Funeral Services for Janice were held on Saturday, July 22, 2023, at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake with Reverend Lori Pankratz officiating. Visitation was on Saturday until the time of service. Burial was in the Devils Lake Cemetery.
