“This was an increase from last year’s tournament with four teams and 22 golfers,” Blake Reinholt, first-year Royal golf coach, told the Journal. Lake Region State College had six golfers in all compete on the day.
Five individuals on the men’s team and one shooting on the women’s side of things. It proved to be a historic day for the Royal program as freshman Kelsey Schlenk won the meet with a score of 84. Her tournament win is the first time a Lake Region State College golfer has won an individual tournament.
The freshman from East Grand Forks, Minn., took first by five strokes. It was an impressive performance by Schlenk, Reinholt said.
“Winning by 5 strokes is quite the accomplishment,” he said. “I was more impressed by the fact that there were 3-4 holes in which she left a few strokes out there and could’ve easily came in under 80. We’re excited to watch her get better and continue to compete for the top spots at tournaments throughout the fall.”
On the men’s side, Eric Gullicks led the way for the Royals shooting an 84. Teammate Bryce Burnett finished with a score of 89. Taylor Foss shot a 99. Bryce Karl and Ben Morris rounded out the squad with scores of 134 and 136, respectively. Overall, the coach felt that the tournament was a good way to kick off the season.
“Having a lot of freshman on the roster, it was nice to have their first meet on their home course to help with their comfort level,” Reinholt said.
