  • Monday’s was a gathering of the who’s who from around the Lake Region and the state of North Dakota on the Mercy Hospital lawn. But standing out from the crowd of politicians, medical personnel and public relations workers were the many veterans who came to celebrate at long last, the opening of the Devils Lake VA Clinic - their clinic.
Veterans from the Spirit Lake Nation and all around the Lake Region have had to travel long distances for medical care. Now, thanks to the efforts of numerous individuals a decade of waiting is at an end. The first patients will be walking through the doors at 8 a.m. Tuesday morning, August 19.
Senators John Hoeven and Heidi Heitkamp with Rep. Kevin Cramer all spoke at Monday’s ceremony. They highlighted the importance of the new facility for rural and Native American veterans.
The new Community Based Outpatient Clinic - or CBOC - will provide accessible care right here in Devils Lake. They will have access to full-time telehealth services, a part-time physician and on-site nurses who will care for veterans five days a week. Through the telehealth technology, veterans will have direct access to specialists at the Fargo VA Health Care System.
