July is almost over and that must mean that it's tournament time in North Dakota Class B American Legion Baseball. Three area teams kicked off their post-season journeys Wednesday afternoon. Nelson County and New Rockford were in first-round action at the Central Region Tournament in Carrington. Cando was also in action playing at the Northeast Region Tournament in Park River. Nelson County was the only team to advance to winner's bracket play with a win Wednesday. New Rockford and Cando, however, will begin playback action after hard-fought losses in the first round.
Nelson County 5 Harwood 2
Behind sound defense, a strong pitching performance and timely hitting, Nelson County tied up the Hogs of Harwood Wednesday afternoon. While the final score was tight, the Owls controlled the action throughout their first-round contest in Carrington. The key for Nelson County was two big innings offensively. In the second, Matt Miller and Jonathon Lund each added RBIs to give the Owls an early 2-0 advantage.
After starting hurler Tyler Gravseth shut down the Harwood bats in the third and the fourth, the Nelson County offense was back at it in the bottom of the fourth frame.Base hits by Riley Nelson and Dakota Hoyt as well as a pair of Hog errors led to three Owl runs giving the home team a 5-0 advantage.
Neither team got back on the board again until the top of the seventh. Harwood plated two runs after a pair of doubles. It, however, wasn't enough as Nelson County sealed the deal with the 5-2 victory. Shortstop Nelson had two of the Owls' six hits while Hoyt added a double. Gravseth picked up the win on the mound while his defense had no errors in the game.
Nelson County, the second seed in the tournament, faces third-seeded Carrington in the second round Thursday evening.
Carrington 8 New Rockford 5
The Carrington American Legion baseball team won on its home field in the opening round of the Central Region Tournament Thursday. The squad topped New Rockford 8-5. New Rockford takes on Harwood at 12:30 p.m. Thursday in loser-out play.
Langdon 16 Cando 6
Despite an inspired effort early by the Cando Legion baseball team, the squad fell by way of a 10-run rule against Langdon. In the first round of the Northeast Regional Tournament, the seventh-seeded squad in the region fell 16-6.
The Bearcats came to hit in the opening innings of the game. Behind hits by Andrew Follman and Jayden Komrosky, the team took an early lead after one. Langdon answered back with four in the second. Cando, however, wasn't done as the squad scored three more behind an RBI-double by Follman to make the score 6-4 in favor of the Bearcats.
From there, it was all Langdon as the home team scored two runs in the fourth, four in the fifth and six in the sixth to walk away with an impressive 16-6 victory. Komrosky took the loss for Cando. The Bearcats take on Rollette at around 3 p.m. Thursday in loser-out play.
