After years of planning, revising and then eventually building – the new Walmart in Devils Lake has finally welcomed the first eager shoppers through its shiny, silvery blue doors.
“It’s going to be a very big benefit for the whole community,“ said Walmart field project supervisor Mary Jo Tunglan, Tuesday afternoon before the grand opening.
The Journal took photos of volunteers and employees during their last minute preparations the day before the opening and attended the ribbon cutting Wednesday at 7:30 a.m., which was followed by the grand opening of the store at 8 a.m.
“We are right on schedule,” said Tunglan, who has helped open floor planning with more than 20 different Walmart stores over the last five years. “I feel like Devils Lake is really excited to have a new Walmart here and we’re glad to be able to provide what the people need.”
The new establishment boasts 24 hours a day, seven days per week service– with a full grocery line that includes local produce, organic and natural selections and a self serve deli and bakery.
There is an automotive tire and lube garage, money center service desk and a vision center which is located near the front of the store’s cash registers.
Several expanded departments exist throughout such as: a health and wellness section, hardware, sporting goods, lawn and garden center, automotive center, electronics, clothing, childrens, jewelry and beauty, pet supplies, deli/bakery, home improvement sections, and much more.
The grand opening also featured a presentation of more than $4,000 worth of grants towards Spirit Lake Nation Social Services, Lutheran Social Service’s Health Families, Devils Lake Fire Department and the Devils Lake Police Department.
DL Walmart now employs approximately 200 full and part time employees. Eighty of those positions are new.
