  • Mildred Amy Cox Mertens, 101, of Fargo, N.D., passed away on Friday, April 25, 2014 at Bethany on 42nd.
    Mass of Christian Burial  will be held in Devils Lake, N.D. on Saturday, June 14 at 8 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church, with interment at St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
    Mildred grew up in Crary, N.D. and graduated from Crary High School. She married Ernest Mertens on January 13, 1934 in Crary. They lived in Devils Lake, N.D., Minot, N.D. and moved to Fargo in 1939. She worked at Herbst Department Store from 1961-1972, when she retired. They then wintered in Merced, Calif., Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., and settled in Casa Grande, Ariz., where they lived until 2000. Mildred was active both in Fargo and Casa Grande in Bridge Clubs and Ladies Golf Associations.
    Mildred lived at Riverview in an assisted living apartment for ten years where she enjoyed playing bridge seven days a week. She moved to Villa Maria and then to Bethany in January.
    Mildred is survived by two sons; Mauris Mertens, Spicer, Minn., Michael Mertens, Devils Lake; and one daughter, Marlya (Ron) Dittmer, Fargo; nine grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Jane Perske, Devils Lake; and several nieces and nephews.
    She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Cora Cox; four brothers, Ralph, Orrin, Jack and Ed; and one sister, Blanch Frith.
