  • Author of comic books,  graphic novels, military history and more returning home to Devils Lake later this month.
Dwight Jon Zimmerman was born in Harvey, North Dakota, and raised in Devils Lake, graduating from Central High School in 1971.  He has been a publisher and writer for over thirty-five years, and he's coming back to his hometown to help raise funds for the Lake Region Public Library. (And, of course, to visit his Mom, Darlene Zimmerman, and many friends!)
The library will be hosting two events with Zimmerman (hereafter, Dwight!):  Tuesday, June 17, 6-8 p.m., and Saturday, June 21, 3-5 p.m.
Both will include book signings of some of his many books (he's bringing as much as he can), including the newest version -- the brand new paperback edition -- of “Lincoln's Last Days:  The Shocking Assassination That Changed America Forever,” co-authored with best-selling writer Bill O'Reilly.  In addition, Dwight will speak about his experiences as a writer and publisher.
Dwight, who resides in Brooklyn, New York, graduated from North Dakota State School of Science at Wahpeton in 1974, then worked briefly as a UND Press employee before moving to The Big Apple to work for Marvel Comics in 1977, writing Spider-Man and X-Men stories.

In 1992, he became executive editor of Topps Comics, where, among many other projects, he wrote an X-Files story set here in Devils Lake!  To be sure, his self-described career has been "varied" --more ups than downs but experiences which he wouldn't trade for the world.
Initially immersed in the comic book publishing world, by the late nineties Dwight was writing books, specifically in the field of military history, for both the adult and juvenile/teen reader:  "First Command: Paths to Leadership" (2005), "Beyond Hell and Back:  How America's Special Operations Forces Became the World's Greatest Fighting Unit" (2007), "The Day the World Exploded:  The Earthshaking Catastrophe at Krakatoa" (2008) (co-authored with Simon Winchester), "The Book of War" (2008) (for which he won the prestigious 2009 Gold Medal for Reference from the Military Writers Society of America), "The Book of Weapons:  Tools of War Through the Ages" (2009), "Uncommon Valor:  The Medal of Honor and the Six Warriors Who Earned It in Afghanistan and Iraq" (2010), Tecumseh: Shooting Star of the Pawnee" (2010) (winning the Bronze Medal Award from the Military Writers Society of America), "The New York Times Complete Civil War, 1861-1865" (lauded as an "indefatigable and resourceful researcher" by editors Harold Holzer and Craig L. Symonds) (2010), "Saga of the Sioux:  An Adaptation of Dee Brown's 'Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee'" (2011), "The Hammer and the Anvil:  Frederick Douglass, Abraham Lincoln, and the End of Slavery in America" (2012), and, of course, "Lincoln's Last Days" (2012) (co-authored with and based on the best-selling book "Killing Lincoln," by Bill O'Reilly).  Whew!  Dwight's been busy!
Page 2 of 2 - He's been back to Devils Lake several times, speaking at the  graduation ceremony of the DLHS Class of 2004, special guest at the City's 125th Anniversary celebrations in 2008, speaker at the 2012 North Dakota Chautauqua at Lake Region State College, and certainly just plain visiting.
    Fundraising for library
The fund-raising part:  Dwight will be bringing original pieces of art from several of the stories he wrote for Marvel Comics and these will be individually displayed.  But the piece de resistance will be a rare copy of Topps Comics X-Files issue #40, set in Devils Lake, North Dakota!  A silent auction will run during Dwight's presentation Tuesday evening, June 17, and will continue through his presentation on Saturday, June 21; winner's will be announced at the conclusion of the Saturday event, proceeds to benefit the Lake Region Public Library!
Please drop by the Lake Region Public Library's Community Room for some refreshments and an interesting visit with and a talk by one of Devils Lake's own:  Dwight Jon Zimmerman, Tuesday June 17, 6-8 p.m., and Saturday, June 21, 3-5 p.m.!
