  • While summer means that school is out for many, the months of June, July and August is an extremely busy time for maintenance and custodial crews at Devils Lake Public Schools. There are a number of projects current underway or in the works this summer at the district's facility, Devils Lake Superintendent of Schools Scott Privratsky told the Journal Monday.
The biggest planned project are major renovations taking place at Prairie View Elementary where crews are currently working on asbestos abatement. Also part of the work this summer, all new lighting, carpeting and ceiling tile will be installed all on the north side of the building. New sprinkler systems will also be put in.
Privratsky stated that asbestos abatement as well as the installation of lighting, carpeting and ceiling tile is expected to be completed on the south side in 2015.
"It's a very big project," he stated. "Once we are completed at Prairie View, all of our elementary schools will have been renovated."
Also taking place this summer at Prairie View will be the installation of playground equipment. Purchased by the PTO, the custodial staff will install the unit this July.
At Sweetwater Elementary School, new outside doors will be put in and the cement by the cafeteria area will be replaced. A shed to store a snowblower will be added. Also, cupboards and storage units, purchased by the PTA, in the updated classrooms will be installed.
Doors outside to the playground and courtyard area will be replaced at Central Middle School. Slip resistant tiles on a ramp at the facility are set to be installed. Other projects at the middle school include seat repair in the gymnasium and new carpet in the band room.
The major project at the high school is the exterior painting of the facility. A Kiln Ventilation System in the art department will be installed.
There will be new entrance doors put in at the Lakes Area Career and Technical Center.
"Overall, most of the projects are fixing something here and installing something there," Privratsky said. "Ultimately, our maintenance staff will work to keep our facilities looking as nice as possible."
