As the spring sports season hits the home stretch, the Devils Lake track and field team has come on strong at exactly the right time. The Firebird boys have taken first at its past two meets while the girls finished with their highest placing of the year with a second-place finish in Rugby.
Both Devils Lake athletes and coaches credit the success to continued hard work throughout the season.
"The hard work these kids have put in is really starting to show," Jake Wateland, co-head coach, commented.
Despite battling tough conditions for much of the season, the Firebirds have done their best to get the most out of every practice.
"Every single practice, we try to get better," Bradley Davidson, sophomore sprinted, commented. "We have been really pushing day-in-and-day-out. It's really nice when you can see the results of that hard work."
Senior thrower Katie Brandt points out that one of the Firebirds' strength is to compete together as a team.
"As a group, you can see the motivation," she commented. "The season's been going really well."
Fellow senior Taylor Vistad has noticed a continued improvement since the beginning of the year.
"Once the weather has become nicer, it's been a lot easier to practice and we've gotten a lot better because of it," the distance runner said. "We have done really well the last few meets."
That improvement was evident at the Hanneman Memorial meet in Rugby Thursday. The boys team took first with 212 points while the girls placed second with 145 points.
"We had great effort from both the boys and girls side! The kids had a lot of success and scored a lot of points for our teams. It was a fun meet and gives us good momentum heading into the final stretch," Wateland commented.
