  • Michael Baxter Lowe, 76, died Wednesday, April 30, 2014 from complications of heart surgery and kidney failure.
    Born in Madison, Wis. and raised in Devils Lake, N.D. Mike enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1955 as an electronic technician. He served aboard on a arctic survey ship, a destroyer, a sub tender and two heavy cruisers. He was an instructor at Dam Neck, Base Electronics officer at Little Creek and his last tour was as Station Commander of the NATO Satellite communications Station in Northwest Virginia. In 1976 Mike retired as a “Mustang” Lieutenant. He earned a B.S. degree in Biology from SUNY shortly before retiring, followed by graduate work at VCU. Mike was a dedicated distance runner. He ran the first Richmond Marathon, numerous Shamrock marathons as well as several 50 miles and one 75 miler.
    Mike’s hobbies included reading, working out complicated iris pedigrees, cooking, geneology and gardening. Iris flowers were his passion.
    Mike is survived by his wife, Anne; daughter, Hannah (Chuck); son, Eric (Patricia); stepson, Alan Smith (Debra); five grandchildren; sister, Pat Lowe Nelson (Jerry); brother, Russell (Ley).
    A celebration of his life was held Sunday, May 4th at his home in Blackstone, Virginia.
