  • Devils Lake Police report that a Lake Region man fell victim to a common scam recently.
The authorities say the man advertised two refrigerators on CraigsList. Police say a scammer responded to the ad and sent the victim a fake check for more than the asking price and asked him to send the difference back via Green Dot Money Card.
Police say between having to reimburse the bank for the value of the fake check he cashed and the value of the Green Dot Card he sent to the scammer, the victim was out more than $3,000.
Police remind residents that getting a check for a large amount and then being asked to send back the difference via Green Dot Card is a very clear sign of a scam. Police say once the scammers get the pin number off the Green Dot Card, the money is gone and can’t be recovered.
