BELCOURT, N.D. -- Following a pair of wins against Grand Forks Central, the first conference victories for both the girls’ and boys’ basketball teams at Devils Lake High School, the Firebirds seem to have sunk into another losing skid, punctuated by a tough night in Belcourt.
Following a pair of wins against Grand Forks Central, the first conference victories for both the girls’ and boys’ basketball teams at Devils Lake High School, the Firebirds seem to have sunk into another losing skid, punctuated by a tough night in Belcourt.
Both Devils Lake varsity basketball teams lost on the road to Turtle Mountain Tuesday night, further extending the school’s run of poor form in 2013-14. The boys lost in a close game, 74-65, while the girls were defeated by a slightly wider margin, 74-58.
The game was a non-conference clash for both teams, making the loss slightly less important for the Firebirds going forward. More than anything, the Turtle Mountain games were a tune-up for what promises to be a crucial EDC match up Friday night in Devils Lake against Fargo North, another conference opponent struggling for wins this season. Those games will be played as a doubleheader, starting with the girls game, which tips off Friday night at the Devils Lake Sports Center.
The Devils Lake head coaches were hoping for an improved effort from their sides in anticipation of the Spartans, especially after a tough weekend against Fargo South and Davies, but in both cases, the Firebirds were unable to come away with wins.
For the girls, it was Madison Walford who led the way in the scoring column yet again. She finished with 24 to further boost her already impressive scoring average. With 19.1 points per game through seven conference contests along with 9.7 rebounds, Walford seems an odds-on favorite to claim all-EDC honors yet again this season.
Eighth grader Amber Burtness finished with 10 points for the Firebirds in the loss.
The Devils Lake boys were led in scoring once again by senior Hunter Chicos, who continued his run of strong performances from the field with 13 points along with two assists and two steals.
Senior Briar LaBeau and sophomore Zach Dahlen finished just behind Chicos with 12 points a piece for Devils Lake.
