  • It was an action packed day of Class B girls basketball on Thursday at the Devils Lake Sports Center, and after four first-round games, four teams now find themselves in the semifinal round of the Lake Region Invitational tournament.
North Star, Carrington, Lakota-Edmore and the Devils Lake JV team all earned wins in their respective first-round contests on Thursday, and all four will be playing again this evening for a spot in the tournament final.
North Star will take on Devils Lake JV at 6 p.m., and Carrington will take on Lakota-Edmore at 7:30.
    North Star vs. Dakota Prairie
The Bearcats entered this weekend’s tournament as the fifth-ranked team in the state, according to the most recent Class-B poll, and their quality was put on clear display against the winless Knights of Dakota Prairie, 87-19.
North Star strolled to an easy win, led by four players who finished in double figures, including Allie Heisler and Sarah Hagler, who had 19 points each.
Devils Lake JV vs. Benson County
The Devils Lake JV team, boosted by 12-point efforts from eighth grader Amber Burtness and sophomore Emily Schafer, were able to hold off defending regional champion Benson County to advance to the semifinals, 42-40.
The Wildcats trailed by as many as 13 points during the second half, but a 13-4 run propelled them back into the game late on, but it was too little, too late from Benson County.
    Lakota-Edmore vs. Four Winds-Minnewaukan
The Lady Indians hung with Fallyn Freije and the Raiders for brief moments in the first half, but the relentless Lakota-Edmore attack eventually proved too much for Four Winds-Minnewaukan to handle
Led by a 17-point performance from Freije, the No. 9 Raiders improved their record to 2-2 on the season with a 62-38 win.
    Carrington vs. Starkweather-Munich
In what was the second-most lopsided result of the day, the Carrington Cardinals, coming in as the seventh-ranked team in the state, swept the Magic Storm aside with relative ease, 71-29.
Kayla Hochhalter led all scorers for Carrington with 24, followed by teammate Jacey Engelhorn, who also put in a fine performance from the field with 20 points of her own.
All second round games are scheduled to be played today, starting with the first consolation game between Dakota Prairie and Benson County, which is set to tip off at 3 p.m.
In light of recent forecasts, there is a strong possibility of tonight’s games being canceled, though the official announcement will not be made until Friday afternoon.
