The Lake Region State men’s basketball team has made a nice recovery from its earlier three-game losing streak, evidenced by the team’s emphatic win Monday night.
The Royals, led by twin 18 point efforts from sophomore guards Devin Tohm and Melvin Langstaff, defeated Mayville State JV by 56 points Monday night at the Devils Lake Sports Center, their widest margin of victory this season. The win is LRSC’s eighth of the year (8-4).
Head coach Joe Kittell, who had cited his team’s lack of focus during their three-game skid, was happy with the way his players worked on Monday night.
“The guys played really hard, locked down defensively and shared the ball,” Kittell said. “We took care of us tonight, and the numbers show that.”
The final statistics indicate one thing: that the story of this game was utter domination, capped by a Royals effort that saw six of the team’s players finish in double figures.
Tohm and Langstaff led the way with 18 each, but close behind them was Patrick Thomas, who really seems to be discovering his scoring touch in recent days. He finished with 15 points against the Comets, just two days removed from leading the team in their weekend victory over Dakota County Tech with 18 points. The Royals also won that game, 87-72.
Karon Linton and Darnell Landon, both players that have seen their playing time diminished recently, got back on the scoresheet in a big way Monday night, finishing with 14 and 13 points, respectively.
Diallo Powell rounded out the double-figure scorers for Lake Region State, recording 11 points in the team’s winning effort.
The Royals will have one day to prepare before heading back on the road Wednesday afternoon against Jamestown JV, a team that LRSC has already beaten this year, 96-49. Tip off for that game is scheduled at 2 p.m.
