  • Devils Lake Wrestling hosted Turtle Mountain and Fargo Davies in a three-team meet on Friday night at the Sports Center, and in both match ups, the Firebirds came out on the losing end.
Devils Lake took on Turtle Mountain in their first meet, and they were defeated convincingly, 60-12.
It was a difficult meet for most of the Firebirds, including senior Austin Schall, who sustained a last-second loss, 4-3, after his opponent, senior Gran Laducer, took Schall down with less than 10 seconds to go.
Schall picked up a hip injury after that late takedown, an injury that, for now, isn’t expected to keep him out of the lineup, according to DL head coach Todd Lambrecht.
The Firebirds suffered five losses via pinfall, a total of 30 team points that went to Turtle Mountain.
The two wrestlers that earned points for Devils Lake against Turtle Mountain were the last two to compete: senior heavyweight Kamron Matejcek and 106-pounder James Fisk, both of whom pinned their opponent.
The win was the second pinfall victory of the season for Fisk, who is the youngest player in the squad as a seventh grader.
After a break in the action for Devils Lake, the Firebirds took to the mat again against EDC foe Fargo Davies, a perennially strong wrestling program.
The Eagles made short work of the Firebirds, winning the meet 63-16.
Austin Schall and Joey Good were the only two wrestlers to earn points for Devils Lake on the mat. Schall won by pinfall midway through the second period, defeating his opponent, Peter Isakson.
Later on, Good, who was pinned against Turtle Mountain, came back with a vengeance against his Davies opponent, winning by major decision, 10-2.
Devils Lake Wrestling will now have a break over the Thanksgiving weekend before resuming EDC action on Dec. 3 in Grand Forks against Central.
