The Minnesota Timberwolves hope to generate some momentum with a few early-season wins.
The Minnesota Timberwolves started off the 2013-14 season on an exciting note at the Target Center on Wednesday night.
Minnesota went on to defeat the Magic 120-115 in overtime and made things more difficult than they should have been.
Kevin Love drained a three pointer with under 15 seconds remaining to tie the game up and send it to overtime.
The Wolves looked impressive in the overtime frame and managed to escape with the victory.
Orlando is supposed to be one of the worst teams in the league this year which was why it was so surprising to see the Wolves struggle so mightily.
The good news is that it was only the first game of a long 82 game season. Hopefully Minnesota can take something from this and use it in other close games throughout the season.
Minnesota was one of the biggest offenders in giving up big leads last season. The fact that they never had a healthy team last year was also a problem.
Kevin Love, Ricky Rubio, and Nikola Pekovic looked well on the court together. They all played well and looked like they can lead this team to its first postseason since 2004.
Tonight's matchup against Oklahoma City will be a much tougher test for Minnesota and they will have to play with much more intensity if they want to walk away a winner.
Kevin Durant and company have been one of the best teams in the Western Conference for the past few seasons and are looking for another deep run in the playoffs.
If Minnesota plays the way they did against Orlando then this game will be over in a hurry.
The Wolves and Thunder split the season series last year with two wins apiece. A 2-0 record to start the year off would be a tremendous feat for Minnesota considering they haven't done it since the 2006-07 season (wow that seems like forever ago).
Former Oklahoma City player Kevin Martin looked impressive in his debut with the Wolves. He contributed 23 points in 43 minutes with his biggest make of the evening coming midway through the overtime period when he was fouled to connect on a three point play.
He is looking like a solid player and will be a huge contributer throughout the season.
This team has a lot to prove and staying healthy is their number one priority. The Western Conference isn't nearly as dominant as it has been in years past and will be a lot more wide open.
It will be interesting to see how the season pans out but a 1-0 record is already a great start for a team that has been struggling for over a decade.
