Fifteen Devils Lake cross country runners competed in the North Dakota state meet this weekend in Valley City, N.D. with both the boys and the girls taking home respective 16th place team finishes.
Austin Goodsell, who has been a leader for the Firebirds boys squad all season, crossed the finish line first for Devils Lake in 104th place, just shy of cracking the 19-minute mark (19:00.67).
Joseph Andrews finished behind him in second for Devils Lake, finishing 124th (19:40.42). Landon Hall (133rd, 19:59.82), Wyatt Jetty (134th, 20:02.89) and Landen Dick (138th, 20:16.10) came in next for the Firebirds within seconds of each other. Andy Newton (143rd, 20:23.89) and Cole Hansen (147th, 20:31.65) rounded out the pack for Devils Lake. The group finished with 633 team points.
On the girls side, Mattea Vetsch led the way again for the Firebirds, finishing 62nd (16:36.45), making her the only Devils Lake runner to crack the top-100 at the state meet. Taylor Vistad (131st, 18:07.37) finished the race next for Devils Lake, follwed closely by teammates Hope Schempp (140th, 18:33.51), Erin Nelson (141st, 18:39.81) and Abby Wavra (143rd, 18:54.46). Sydney Steffen rounded out the pack (144th, 19:00.22) for Devils Lake. The team finished with 617 points.
