The Cedar Inn will be celebrating their 20th Anniversary on Wednesday Oct. 23. The restaurant will have numerous specials throughout the day in honor of the occasion.
Joanne and Larry Gehrtz opened the Cedar Inn on Oct. 17, 1993 and have enjoyed running the restaurant together for all these years.
Running a successful restaurant is not an easy task. It is even more difficult in a small town. Joanne and Larry have worked hard for the last twenty years and it has paid off.
“One of the hardest parts about running a restaurant is finding good help,” said Joanne.
Luckily for the Gehrtz's, they have had some great employers. Jan Solway and January Obenchain have both been waitresses at the Cedar Inn since its inception in 1993.
“I could probably count on one hand how many times Jan and January have missed work in the last 20 years. They are the most reliable workers you could ask for,” said Joanne.
Dennis Desjarlais was with the restaurant since the beginning as well before he recently retired. Desjarlais was a dishwasher.
One of the perks that the Cedar Inn has that most restaurants don't is the fact that they serve homemade food.
Larry makes all of the soups and all of the dinner specials are homemade. One of the best things on the menu according to Joanne is the cedar sausage that Larry makes. Joanne and Larry are not the only ones in the family who have helped keep business running.
All three of their sons have had the opportunity to work with mom and dad over the years.
Richard (26), Clayton (24), and Dylan (21) have all worked at the Cedar Inn. Richard graduated from UND in 2010 and helps manage.
Joanne said she is very fortunate that she has had the opportunity to work with all three of her sons.
The Gehrtz's work hard everyday to make sure they have the best food and service possible. They also know that they wouldn't be where they are at without great customers and a terrific staff.
“It is nice coming into work everyday and talking to our customers. We also know that we couldn't do what we do without our staff,” said Joanne.
