The Lake Region State College Lady Royals put up an outstanding performance on Wednesday night in a 3-1 win over the NDSCS Wildcats.
The crowd was smothered in pink and both teams wore pink apparel in honor of breast cancer awareness month.
The first set saw the Lady Royals trail throughout the whole game up until they tied it at 24-24. They took their first lead of the set to go up 25-24 and won the next point to take the first set by a score of 26-24.
“The first game set the momentum for us. The girls played with heart and played to win,” said head coach Brigitte Freschette.
The second set of the night saw a dominating performance from the Lady Royals from start to finish. They took a 19-9 lead at one point which was their biggest lead of the game. They went on the win the second 25-14.
Unlike most games, this one saw a ten minute break in between sets two and three. The break seemed to help the Wildcats tremendously. They looked like a whole new team in the third set.
NDSCS took an early 6-2 lead but the Royals fought back and tied it up at 11-11. The Wildcats eventually got back on track and won nine of the next 11 points. They went on to win the third set 25-16 and looked to have momentum going into the fourth set.
The fourth set saw the teams go back and fourth. The Wildcats took an early 7-1 lead and looked like they were going to win this set easily but the Lady Royals still had a lot of fight in them and never gave up.
LRSC kept the game close but had trouble tying it up. They trailed 22-19 but won the next three points to tie it at 22-22. LRSC earned the next point to take their first lead of the set to go up 23-22. The Wildcats got the next point to tie it up once again. The Lady Royals earned the next point which saw the crowd go wild. Meghan Jorgenson blocked a Wildcat kill to give the Lady Royals a 25-23 fourth set win and a 3-1 victory.
“The girls stepped up to the challenge tonight and wanted it,” said Freschette.
