  • The Devils Lake football team started Friday night's game the best way possible by scoring on their first play of the game.
Sophomore Bradley Davidson found a hole in the defense and scampered 61 yards into the end-zone to give the Firebirds a 7-0 lead 16 seconds into the game.
It was a tremendous start for the Firebirds but as the old adage goes, it's not how you start but how you finish and unfortunately it wasn't the finish the Firebirds were looking for.
West Fargo came back later in the quarter and finished off a nice drive of their own when Jacob Hoy found Alexander Talley in the back of the endzone for a two yard touchdown to tie the game at seven.
Devils Lake found the end-zone once more before the half when Blake Prozinski ran it 24 yards to pay dirt which gave the Firebirds a 14-7 lead at halftime.     West Fargo fixed their mistakes from the first half and came out strong in the second half. Samuel Olsen carried it four yards to give West Fargo their first score of the second half and cut the lead to one due to a missed extra point.
The Packers had an excellent third quarter and went on to score once more less than two minutes later when Samuel Olsen ran it from 11 yards out to give West Fargo a 19-14 lead.
The next score wouldn't come until just over halfway into the fourth quarter when Jacob Hoy scored off a two yard run to give the Packers a 25-14 lead. The Packers were successful on their two point attempt to make it a 27-14 game.
The Firebirds came back strong in their next drive and a 14 yard pass from Brody Bracken to Austin Erickson cut the Packers lead to 27-20 with 3:51 remaining.    Unfortunately the Firebirds defense couldn't come up big on the last drive of the game which saw Samuel Olsen earn his third touchdown of the evening to give West Fargo a 34-20 lead which would end up being the final score.
“We didn't execute inside the red-zone or inside the five yard line,” said head coach Jay Schneider.
Leading the way for the Firebirds on offense was quarterback Brody Bracken who went 12-16 for 209 yards and a touchdown. His favorite target was Austin Erickson who had four receptions for 113 yards and a touchdown. Blake Prozinski led the team in rushing with eight carries for 85 yards and a score. Bradley Davidson also had a good night rushing with 64 yards off of nine carries.
Page 2 of 2 - “We threw the ball well and it was probably our best offensive game by far,” said Schneider.
Trent Reierson had a stellar game on the defensive side of the ball with 9.5 tackles while Austan Wellman tallied 7.5 tackles.
“Defensively we really didn't give up the big, big plays but we just couldn't get off the field,” said Schneider.
The Firebirds will try to get their first win since week one this Friday night when they travel to to Fargo Davies.
“We don't have time to dwell on it and we just have to keep rolling on,” added Schneider.
