Orville Johnson, age 89, of Sheyenne, ND, died Tuesday, September 24, 2013, at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND.
Funeral service will be Saturday, September 28 at 10:30 a.m. at First Lutheran Church, Sheyenne, with Pastor Natasha Woitzel-Kolles officiating. Interment will be in Eden Lutheran Cemetery, rural Sheyenne. Military Honors will be accorded by the New Rockford American Legion, Sheyenne VFW and North Dakota National Guard.
Casket Bearers will be Tilford Broten, Lorren Jordre, Darrell Anderson, Robert Hanson, Kevin Bachmeier, Ron Daugherty, Bob Daugherty, Dennis Daugherty. Organist is Mary Ellen Rue and vocalist, Jared Kolles.
Orville Henry Johnson, son of Olaf and Hilda (Hanson) Johnson, was born September 3, 1924, in the Oberon, ND area. The family moved to Valhalla Township in Wells County in 1931, and he attended Valhalla No. 2 school.
Orville entered the US Army December 1, 1945, and was stationed in Germany. He was discharged February 18, 1947.
In 1951, the family moved to the Nick Paulson farm, Norway Lake Township, Wells County, which Orville later purchased from his father. Orville farmed there until his retirement.
On September 4, 1971, Orville was united in marriage to Ann Porubski in Trenton, N.J. In 2011, they moved to New Rockford and have resided at Heritage House.
He was active in the Sheyenne VFW, New Rockford American Legion, had served on the Board of Directors for Farmers Union, Sheyenne, and the Valhalla Township Board. He was also a member at Eden Lutheran Church and later Grandfield Lutheran Church. Orville enjoyed fishing and gardening, and farming was his ambition in life.
He is survived by his wife Ann; one brother, Arnold (Naomi), Cocoa, Fla.; two stepsons which he considered to be his own sons, Randy (Karen) Porubski, Robbinsville, N.J., and George (Sue) Porubski, Hightstown, N.J.; four step grandchildren; two step great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Orville was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Laura Daugherty, and brother, Arnie.
