The Devils Lake Lady Firebirds put up their best performance of the young season and earned their first home win of the year in a hard fought game against Grand Forks Central.
The first game saw each team play great volleyball. The game went to a 25-25 tie with each team trading points. Devils Lake had two separate chances to end the game but Grand Forks Central didn't let that happen. The Firebirds finally shut down the Knights to earn two consecutive points and take a 29-27 game one win.
The momentum was in favor of the Firebirds but it didn't translate in game two. The Knights played much better and won 25-20 to tie it at one game apiece.
The third game was another battle that saw both teams play outstanding volleyball. The Knights had a 24-20 lead and it looked like they were going to take a 2-1 lead but the Firebirds were a determined group and scored four unasnserwed points to tie it at 24-24. Each team earned a point apiece to make it a 25-25 but the Firebirds would once again earn the two extra points they needed to take the crucial third game by a final of 27-25.
It looked like the Firebirds were on the verge of taking this one in four games but the Knights didn't let the tough game three loss phase them. They came back in the fourth game and won it 25-20 to force an exciting game five.
The Firebirds crowd really got behind the team in the fifth set which seemed to help them out a lot. They played their best game of the night and went on to win 15-6 to take a 3-2 homecoming victory on parents night which put the crowd into a frenzy.
“This is a game we knew we could win but it was tough though. Grand Forks Central played hard tonight but we did the little things right and things we did well against Fargo North a few days ago and you saw it translate here tonight,” said Devils Lake head coach Warren Michael.
