  • Devils Lake has experienced a fair bit of growth over the last few years, evidenced by new business sprouting up throughout the town.
Ultra Green is expected to reach full production in the near future, the new Applebees will be opening in late October, and on Tuesday, ground was broken for the new Walmart Super Center, which is scheduled to be up and running this spring.
“We’re doing really well in Devils Lake with the growth we’ve had,” said Paula Vistad, Devils Lake Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director. “We can only hope that it continues.
“A little bit of it is likely a result of what’s going on in Williston, but this town is a mecca for hunters and fishermen. We have a lot to offer here. I think people are finally realizing that Devils Lake is a place to come and stay rather than just a place to pass through.”
The Walmart groudbreaking welcomed a number of prominent figures, including Devils Lake mayor Richard Johnson, Walmart store manager Monica Griedl and Walmart Asset Protection manager Eric Lawson.
Lawson has indicated that while the new facility will not be open until spring 2014, the hiring process has already begun.
“We’re looking to hire between 200 to 250 new employees, which is an addition of 100 new employees to this facility,” Lawson said. “We’ll be having a hiring fair before the new facility opens. We’ll also be petitioning the college for part-time and full-time help.”
While the official grounbreaking ceremony took place on Tuesday morning, construction has actually been underway at the build site for several weeks.
According to sources, the construction crew is on track to have a building constructed before the snow falls.
As developments continue to progress, the Journal will deliver the latest news on the Super Center's construction.
