The Devils Lake Firebirds only tallied 99 yards of total offense on Friday night en route to their first loss of the young season.
The first quarter was an offensive struggle for both teams as neither team could get on the board.
Grand Forks Red River took a 7-0 lead early in the second quarter with a two yard run by Jordan Lunski.
The Roughriders would go on to add another score late in the half when Chad Bartosh connected with Casey Schumacher for a 24 yard touchdown to take a 14-0 lead going into halftime.
Both teams played tough early in the second half but Grand Forks Red River would find the end zone once again late in the third quarter when Zach Ranisate ran for a two yard touchdown to put the Roughriders up 21-0.
The Firebirds clawed their way back and scored on an Austin Schall two yard run to cut the Roughriders lead to 21-6.
Grand Forks Red River hit pay dirt midway through the fourth quarter when Lucas Nuelle ran it in from two yards out to help the Roughriders extend their lead to 28-6.
Red River went on to score one last touchdown in the final two minutes to take a 35-6 lead which round up being the final score.
The Roughriders outgained the Firebirds on offense by a total of 329 yards to 99.
Sophomore Bradley Davidson led the way for the Firebirds offensively. He finished with seven rushed for 51 yards. Senior Austin Schall finished the night with 13 attempts for 36 yards.
On the defensive side of the ball Josh Frelich put up a team high 6.5 tackles along with an interception. Blake Prozinski finished the evening with six tackles while Sean Olson had two interceptions to go along with his 5.5 tackles.
The next test for the Firebirds will be this Saturday when they host Fargo South at 3 p.m. for their homecoming game.
Both teams are 1-1 on the season. The winner of Saturday’s game will earn their first victory in the EDC.
