The North Dakota Class Nine-Man state champions earned their first win of the season on Friday as New Rockford-Sheyenne defeated the Benson County Wildcats 32-14.
The Rockets gained control of the game early thanks to an Ethan Haley return touchdown to start the game off. After just 11 seconds, New Rockford was up 6-0.
Haley and the Rocket offense scored again quickly on their first offensive drive, this time on a 4 yard run from Haley to stretch the New Rockford lead to 12.
Haley was all over the field for the Rockets, and he knows that after the run they had last season, and considering their early struggles in 2013, this game was a must win for his team.
"We needed this," Haley said. "We needed it bad. But it feels great. Tonight, we finally put a few pieces together and got it."
The Rockets improved to 1-2 on the year with the win and will match up against Four Winds next week in Fort Totten.
Benson County and their new head coach Robert Bubach are still in search of their first win of the season.
The Wildcats (0-3) had the score as close as six points in the waning moments of the third quarter, but the defending state champions proved too much for Benson County in the end.
Bubach and his team also sustained a massive 76-0 defeat to Cavalier earlier in the season.
Though the results aren't there for his team yet, Bubach is encouraged by team's performances, ensuring that his guys are getting better every week.
He just feels that the key to his team's success will be to eliminate the mental errors that have plagued the Wildcat season thus far.
"We keep having those breakdowns," Bubach said. "On every big play they made, we were out of position. We let that happen.
"Don't get me wrong, they (New Rockford) earned this win, but our mental mistakes hurt us tonight. We can't keep having those breakdowns on defense."
Benson County will be idle next weekend. After that, they'll play Four Winds at home on Sept. 20.
