The Firebirds were simply overmatched.
Playing against the undefeated Fargo-Shanley Deacons, Devils Lake was swept in three sets, including two in which the Firebirds failed to score double-digit points.
Devils Lake head coach Warren Michael knew that the Deacons were going to be a tough test. In fact, he seems to think that Fargo-Shanley is the best team his girls will face all year.
“I bet they’re the best team in the state,” Michael said. “They went 6-0 in Bismarck, and they just beat West Fargo in five, which is another very good team. They’re a very dominating group.”
After dropping the first two sets, the Firebirds came out fighting in the third. At one point they carried a seven point lead on the Deacons.
That run in the third set encouraged Michael, who said that his team needs to play at that level with a bit more often.
One thing that plagued the Firebird effort on Thursday night was their inability to kill off their chances, which Shanley was able to do quite effectively.
“We have runs where we’re showing our potential. It’s just a matter of consistency right now,” Michael said. “We’re very young, but I can see this group developing into a very good team. I think it’s there.”
The Firebirds will have a few days off before resuming their conference schedule on Tuesday against Fargo North.
Devils Lake is still searching for its first district win of the season.
