  • Bowlers beware, because Royal Lanes will be having its “Freaky Friday” promotion all day today, but $1 games are not all that will be offered.
From noon-9 p.m., the center will also be offering $1 slices of pizza and $1 draft beers. After 9 p.m., bowlers are invited to “rock and bowl” during moonlight bowling until midnight for just $15.
This promotion is meant to draw public attention back to the bowling alley, because according to the Royal Lanes management team, business has been struggling lately, and they’ll want to do everything in their power to salvage the facility.
Professional bowler Bob Markiewicz feels the same way.
As mentioned in yesterday’s paper, Markiewicz is a touring bowler on the PBA senior tour, and he is in Devils Lake this week to help out the bowling alley any way he can.
“I want to do everything that I can to help,” he said. “In towns like this, once a center like this closes and they take those lanes out, they don’t re-open. I’ve seen it.”
Markiewicz will be at Royal Lanes for the duration of the promotion and will offer free tips and lessons to those who call on his services, first come, first serve. He also plans to put a show on for those in attendance with a trick shot performance at some point during the day.
Now a resident of San Diego, Calif., Markiewicz is a member of the San Diego Bowling Hall of Fame. He also has three PBA regional titles to his name, and he has bowled 137 perfect games throughout his career.
And now he’s here to bolster the bowling scene in Devils Lake.
Markiewicz encourages all those who care to voice their concerns over the state of the bowling alley to do so, either to him or to the management staff. The public’s input can only benefit the center, according to Markiewicz, and bowlers who attend this afternoon’s promotion are encouraged to speak their minds.
Because at the end of the day, Royal Lanes is a nice facility. It just needs a bit of help.
“When I retire one of these days, I’d be proud to run a center like this,” Markiewicz said. “This is a very nice place.”
