Mattie M. Steinhaus, 84, of Willmar, Minn., formerly of Crary, N.D., went home to be with her Savior on Friday, August 2, 2013, after a short battle with mesothelioma cancer.
Funeral services for Mattie will be held on Wednesday, August 7, at 11a.m. at the Willmar Bible Church, Willmar with interment at Cloverleaf cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday, August 6 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Harvey Anderson Funeral Home, Willmar. Visitation will continue on Wednesday from 10:00 am until time of service.
Mattie M. Steinhaus, was born on December 10, 1928, to Moses and Mary (Lehman) Bontreger in Rusk County, Wisc., the seventh of ten children. As a young girl, the family moved to the Rogers and Dazey, N.D. area. She attended school through the 8th grade. When Mattie left home she worked at a bakery in Valley City, N.D.
On April 2, 1953, Mattie was united in marriage to Clarence Steinhaus. Clarence and Mattie, along with Clarence’s two sons, lived and farmed near Crary, N.D. Clarence and Mattie were also blessed with four boys of their own. Mattie moved to Willmar in 1975, a few years after Clarence’s death. Mattie worked for Calvin Custom Poultry and then helped care for elderly people, retiring earlier this year due to her health.
Mattie had a servant’s heart evidenced by her love of entertaining, visiting and caring for others. Her priorities in life were serving the Lord and her family. Mattie also enjoyed gardening, sewing and reading.
Mattie is survived by three sons, Russ (LaNae) of Littleton, Colo., Lynn (Cherlyn) of Beresford, S.D., Mike (Suzanne) of Pennock, Minn.; many grandchildren and step grandchildren; siblings, Abe Bontreger of Beetown, Wisc., Edna Ritze of Sequim, Wash., Francis Jorgenson of Valley City, Amelia (Roland) Ekstrand of Hinckley, Minn., Jacob (Lillian) Bontrager of Mesa, Ariz. and Reuben (Bettie) Bontrager of Dazey.
Mattie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clarence; stepsons Sheldon and Robert, son, Keith; grandson, Chad; and siblings, Sarah Mast, Anna Klein and Simon Bontrager.
