Devils Lake Police say a Washington state man is facing multiple charges after he allegedly mixed chemicals used in the manufacture of meth starting a fire in a local motel.

Police and fire crews responded to the Trails West motel at 7 p.m. on Saturday night for a report of a smoke smell.

Police say as the motel was being evacuated they made contact with 44 year old Paul Soto of Washington state.

Police say they noticed a large amount of smoke in Soto’s room and also saw a small cooler along with other items used to manufacture meth in the room.

Police say fire crews extinguished the material and noticed that a small fire had happened earlier in the room.Police then obtained a warrant for Soto’s room and vehicle and seized the cooler and several chemicals and other materials along with a small amount of meth.

Police say Soto is facing felony charges of manufacturing a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance. Police say additional charges could also be filed against Soto in connection with the fire.
