  • BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota Gov. Jack Dalrymple is asking President Barack Obama to declare 19North Dakota counties and two Indian reservations a federal disaster area to help them recover from severe storms and heavy rainfall.
Dalrymple sent the letter on Tuesday.
The governor says many areas of North Dakota received record rainfall between May 17 and June 16, leading to major flooding that caused an estimated $7 million in damages to roads, bridges and other public infrastructure.
Dalrymple says that already-full drainage areas, rivers and tributaries quickly overflowed and caused widespread overland flooding.
Areas covered include the counties of Benson, Bottineau, Cavalier, Dunn, Kidder, McHenry, McKenzie, McLean, Mountrail, Nelson, Pembina, Pierce, Ramsey, Sheridan, Stark, Towner, Walsh, Ward and Wells and the Spirit Lake and the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa reservations.
