It is quite a sight to see as hundreds of walkers and runners participate in the North Dakota National Guard Fallen Soldiers Run/Walk coming up this year on June 22.
Last year it was a 12 K with each of those kilometers marked with the photo and name of one of the fallen soldiers who have died in the war on terrorism since it began. At each marker some would salute, one runner knelt to make the sign of the cross at each memorial, while others would gently pat the sign as they walked or ran by.
This year two have been added, so now it is a 14 K.
The added names are North Dakota Army National Guard soldiers who died in a roadside bomb attack in Afghanistan, on Dec. 3, 2012, Sgt. 1st Class Darren Linde, 41, of Devils Lake, and Spc. Tyler Orgaard, 20, of Bismarck.
The runners and walkers will gather at 7:30 a.m. in the Burdick Arena in Devils Lake for registration. The cost is $25 per person or $60 per family (three or more) which includes a t-shirt. Proceeds will benefit the ND TAPS Program - TAPS stands for Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors.
The run starts at 8 a.m. Runners and walkers will continue down College Drive S. along the bike path to Roosevelt Park, turn and follow the path to cross Highway 2 at John Deere. They will continue along the bike path to Lakewood, proceed through Lakewood to the back gate of Camp Grafton with the finish line at the historic Edwards House.
Refreshments will be provided at the finish line and transportation provided back to Burdick Arena.
