The Devils Lake Firebirds football team tasted their first action of the year last week when they partook in the Valley City State University football team camp held from June 6-9.
34 players in grades 10-12 made the trip to participate in the four day camp. The four days involved individual offensive and defensive skills, seven on seven, one on ones for linemen, offensive and defensive team time with the coaching staffs of the individual schools, and live scrimmages amongst the schools. Each school ran 15 offensive and defensive plays during the scrimmages.
One of the highlights of the camp for the Firebirds was coming out victorious in all three overtime challenges that they competed in.
In the overtime challenge each team has four plays to try and score a touchdown from the ten yard line and must go for two after every score.
The Firebirds were seeded number two out of 12 teams and defeated North Prairie 6-0 in their first matchup to move on to the next round where they faced Valley City. This matchup ended in the same fashion as the first with the Firebirds coming out with 6-0 victory.
The Firebirds took on Dickinson in the championship game and earned a 8-6 victory to be crowned champions.
“The kids played well over the course of the camp, especially in the overtime challenge,” said head coach Jay Schneider.
The next action for the football team will be July 16-17 when they have their annual football camp at the North Dakota School for the Deaf practice field. Cost for grades 9-12 will be $60.
